Beautiful Backyard Garden

Southern Gardening is in Tupelo, MS at the home of Sarah Young admiring her beautiful backyard garden. Let’s take a closer look at some of the plants growing in this space. As you enter the garden area, you can’t help but notice the gorgeous Japanese maples. Japanese maples are renowned for their delicate, deeply lobed leaves, which come in a variety of colors ranging from green to red to purple, depending on the cultivar. They can range in size from small shrubs to small trees, typically growing between 6 to 25 feet tall, though there are some exceptions on either end of that spectrum. There are numerous cultivars of Japanese maples, each with its own unique characteristics in terms of leaf shape, color, and growth habit. Following along the rustic brick pathway, you are surrounded by many native and non-native plants, trees, and shrubs. I love the clump of various Hosta varieties in the shaded area of the garden. Each one has its own unique color and leaf shape. The native Coral honeysuckle vine in this garden is just starting to put out flower blooms. The clusters of tubular flowers are typically coral to red-orange in color and very attractive to pollinators. I love how native and non-native plants have been incorporated into this garden space.
